As Australia enters the summer holiday season, insurers and transport specialists are raising alarms about heightened road risks resulting from the convergence of increased freight activity and holiday travel.
This period sees a significant uptick in both passenger vehicles and heavy trucks on the roads, amplifying the potential for accidents and safety incidents.

The National Truck Accident Research Centre (NTARC) reports that in 85.7% of fatal crashes involving a car and a heavy vehicle, the truck driver was not at fault. This statistic highlights the critical need for private motorists to exercise caution and awareness when sharing the road with commercial fleets. Aaron Louws, NTI's Supply Chain Technical Manager, emphasised the importance of understanding the operational differences between trucks and cars, noting that trucks have larger blind spots and require longer distances to slow down. He advised, "A little patience on the road really can save lives. Being extra cautious on rural roads and driving within speed limits, and to conditions can help avoid putting anyone in a dangerous situation."

Fatigue is another significant concern during the holiday season, as many families embark on long-distance journeys on unfamiliar or regional roads. Louws stressed the importance of planning and rest, stating, "Taking the time to plan your journey, schedule rest breaks, and stopping when you feel tired is critical. There's no quick fix for fatigue; the only real way to recover is sleep."

The overlap of the holiday period with peak freight activity further complicates the road safety landscape. In the November-December period last year, Australians lodged 103 million shipments, leading to an increased presence of heavy vehicles and delivery vans on suburban and regional streets. Louws highlighted the essential role of transport and logistics workers during this time, urging motorists to show courtesy and give heavy vehicles space to ensure safety for all road users.

For fleet operators and transport business owners, this period necessitates heightened vigilance and proactive risk management strategies. Implementing comprehensive safety training, monitoring driver fatigue, and ensuring vehicles are well-maintained can mitigate potential risks. Additionally, fostering a culture of safety and awareness among drivers can contribute to reducing incidents during this high-risk period.

In summary, the holiday season presents unique challenges for road safety in Australia. Both private motorists and commercial operators must exercise increased caution, plan journeys meticulously, and prioritise rest to navigate this period safely. Collaborative efforts and shared responsibility are key to ensuring the well-being of all road users during the festive season.
