While the reform is usually discussed in relation to life insurance, it also matters for income insurance because many retail policies sit within the broader life insurance framework.

The key issue is confidence. Genetic testing can help people understand health risks, make treatment decisions and participate in preventive care. If illness or injury stops work, the difference between having a suitable policy and having no cover can be significant. The reform also reinforces why disclosure remains critical. Applicants should answer questions accurately, read policy documents carefully and understand how exclusions, waiting periods and benefit periods apply.

It is also a reminder that pre-existing conditions are still treated differently from predictive genetic information. A diagnosed medical condition, current treatment plan or recent symptoms may still influence underwriting. That distinction can be confusing, especially where family history, genetic risk and personal medical history overlap.

For consumers, the best response is to stay informed and review cover before a health event makes choices narrower.
